The long awaited 6th Gen, All New 2016 Chevrolet Camaro has just been revealed after numerous sneak peaks over the last weeks. First impressions are of evolution rather than revolution as the car looks like a shorter version of the outgoing model. The styling may not look very different but Chevy assures us that everything is new except rear bowtie emblem and the SS badge. The major changes are under the skin allowing for a faster, more nimble driving experience, enabled by an all-new, lighter architecture and a wider range of engines. The new car sits on GM’s Alpha architecture, the same platform the Cadillac ATS and CTS currently use.

Engines and Performance

Let’s face it Chevy is gunning for the Mustang here and so GM engineers have managed to trim more than 200 pounds from the car.  Engines on offer include 4, 6 and 8 cylinders, the 4 being a first in a Camaro. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine makes 275 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, similar to the outputs in the Cadillac ATS and CTS. Chevy says it’ll get more than 30 mpg on the highway and reach 60 mph in less than six seconds.
Second up is the 6 which is offered in many other GM vehicles,  it’s the 3.6 liters with direct injection and makes 335 hp and 284 lb-ft.
Last, but not least is the 6.2-liter LT1 V-8 which slots into the SS and is the same engine offered in the Corvette Stingray. It makes 455 horses and 455 lb-ft. The LT1 engine is available with a standard six-speed manual transmission – with new Active Rev Match technology that “blips” the throttle for perfectly timed downshifts

Each engine is available with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission.

Magnetic Ride Control active suspension will also be available on the Camaro SS for the first time. To top it off an All-new Drive Mode Selector is available with 4 modes: Snow/Ice, Tour, Sport and – on SS models – Track settings.

All Camaro models offer Brembo brakes – they’re standard on SS – optimized for the car’s mass and performance capability. On Camaro LT, the available brakes include 12.6-inch (320 mm) front rotors with four-piston calipers and 12.4-inch (315 mm) rear rotors with single-piston sliding calipers. Camaro SS employs 13.6-inch (345 mm) front rotors with four-piston fixed calipers and 13.3-inch (338 mm) rear rotors with four-piston fixed calipers.

Interior

All-new, interior with shifter-focused center console, intuitive controls, flat-bottom steering wheel, and higher quality materials throughout
Unique control rings around the air vents used for temperature and fan speed adjustments, eliminating the need for conventional buttons. Two screens are offered, an eight-inch screen, integrated in the center of the instrument panel, serves as the interface for the enhanced, next-generation MyLink system. Overall quality is said to have improved with softer feel plastics throughout.

The Camaro hasn’t escaped from the the trend of fake noise piped into the cabin. Models equipped with the available Bose audio system also feature engine sound enhancement, which amplifies the native sounds of the 2.0L turbo engine – and can be disabled based on the driver’s preference. Both the 3.6L V-6 and 6.2L V-8 feature mechanical sound enhancers – resonators that direct induction noise from the engine bay into the cabin.

The Gen Six Camaro goes on sale later this year, offered in LT and SS models.
