We’re talking Queen Mary 2 here as GMC reveals the all new the 2021 Yukon and Yukon XL, upping the ante by offering class-leading technology, an AT4 version and a turbo-diesel, an engine I loved in my recent GMC Sierra test.

Power, what are my options?

The most powerful engine in the full-size SUV segment, is the all-new 6.2L V8 with Dynamic Fuel Management (standard on Denali) delivers an estimated 420 horsepower, paired with a standard 10-speed transmission. The base engine is the is an all-new 5.3L V8 producing 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque. or you can opt for the excellent 3.0-liter straight-six turbo diesel with 277 hp and a stonking 460 lb-ft of torque. Both V8s feature stop/start and cylinder deactivation that lets them run on as few as two cylinders. Also available is a First-in-class, four-corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension systems for improved ride comfort. When 4WD LOW is engaged, the driver can raise the body up to 2 inches (50 mm) for additional ground clearance when traveling off-road.

Speaking of off-road an all-new available Active Response 4WD System combines technologies including an electronic Limited Slip Differential, to continuously monitor road conditions and react to improve traction, handling and overall control.

Is it Bigger?

Both the Yukon and Yukon XL have grown, measuring almost five inches longer between the axles and offering more than 20 additional cubic feet of max cargo room compared to the outgoing version. If you need more space, it’s available by the acre.

Inside View

For the first time, Denali models now have an exclusive interior to differentiate them from lesser models. The Denali comes with a completely new instrument panel, unique seats and a choice among four unique color themes, including authentic wood trim, with a fully natural look and texture. A 10-inch central touchscreen manages infotainment duties, with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The non Denali versions feature a “floating” infotainment screen instead of incorporating it into the dash.

First-Ever Yukon AT4

GMC has said will offer the new AT4 sub-brand across all product lines by the end of 2020 so enter the Yukon AT4 which provides a more aggressive off-road inspired design and the available four-corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension. The Yukon AT4 offers a nearly 32-degree approach angle for added off-road capability.

  • Two-speed transfer case
  • 20-inch Goodyear® all-terrain tires
  • Traction Select System with off-road mode
  • Hill Descent Control
  • Skid plates protecting key areas of the underbody
  • AT4-exclusive leather appointed seats and stitching
  • Unique Jet Black interior color theme with Brandy accents
  • Heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats and heated second-row outboard seats

Technology

Every Yukon comes standard with forward collision assist with low-speed autobraking, pedestrian detection and hill hold assist. SLT, AT4 and Denali trims add lane-keeping assist, rear cross-traffic alert, blind-spot monitoring and lane-change assist. A 360-degree camera is available on the SLT and AT4, standard on the Denali. Adaptive cruise control is only available as an option on the top-tier Denali.
